Hello

Jeff Camilleri

Musician

Versatile bassist / vocalist and composer Jeff Camilleri was born in Sydney, Australia December 9, 1966. His mother bought him his first guitar (Japanese Emperador Les Paul) together with a copy of "The Beatles Complete". Forming a band at  school, Jeff and his mates learned the Beatles tunes from cover to cover.

The guitar wasn't Jeff's passion; drums is what he wanted to play. Not being able to convince his Mother that she should buy him a drum set, his best friend had a drum set in the garage so they formed a band with Jeff on kit. After a short time he met a compromise of sorts; Jeff switched to bass and his musical journey continued.

Paul McCartney and the "Beatles Complete" book changed his life. Without it music may have passed him by.

After over thirty years of calling music his profession, Jeff  continues to enjoy life and the joy that music brings, not only to him but to those he has the good fortune to play in-front of.

Behind The Lyrics - Chelsea

Behind The Lyrics - Chelsea

Chelsea was inspired by an adoration for Joni Mitchell. As a pure artist she has few rivals. Her true artistry has touched the lives of so many with her eclectic style, deep lyrics and haunting voice.

Joni has inspired me, entertained me, taught me and uplifted me throughout my musical life. I use her as a yardstick lyrically. It prevents me from churning out meaningless lyric.

Thinking about her trials and tribulations I started to pen a song about her. I quickly departed from Joni as the subject and instead, created a fictional character loosely based around thoughts of Joni and her colourful and often tragic story.

Using Joni as my inspiration, Chelsea (named after Chelsea Morning - Joni Mitchell) is a female artist who after giving up her newborn starts on her journey, whilst carrying around the pain of forgoing motherhood for her artistry. Over the three verse the story depicts a mixed story of success and failure.

"Chelsea" features the guitars of Brett Wood, organ by Casper Tromp and a beautifully performed piano part by Charmaine Ford. Mitch Farmer on drums and yours truly, Jeff Camilleri on bass, vocals and acoustic guitars.

Buying your first bass

Which Instrument should I start on?

Many parents ask me, is the bass guitar is a good instrument to start on? They say things like "I've heard that piano is the best instrument to begin musical training". Is this correct?

I am a big supporter of music students obtaining keyboard skills. The piano is technically an easy instrument to start on. Curved fingers and good posture is all that a beginner needs to make an immediate sound. Music theory training is easier to explain and understand using the piano as well. So there are many advantages to learning this instrument.

From my personal experience, I can tell you that the best instrument for you or your child to start on is the instrument that is wish for. If a child is disappointed at not being able to learn their chosen instrument, they will not take to it. They may even consider it a task
